ATHENS - There’s a notion going around college football that the Georgia Bulldogs can’t recruit and sign elite wide receivers.

It’s a garbage narrative, and one Kirby Smart has already put to bed.

Still, just because Georgia may not sign a 5-star receiver this cycle doesn’t mean they aren’t targeting big-time talent. In fact, it appears James Coley and the Dawgs are trending in the right direction for one of the nation’s top receivers.

That would be in-state four-star, Travis Smith Jr.‍ The Atlanta native out of Westlake High School has been a top Bulldog target for a while now and spoke with Dawg Post recently about his recruitment, relationship with James Coley, his official visit schedule, and much more.

“I took multiple visits to Georgia so far this year but I’ve taken visits to Auburn, Alabama, and Tennessee this year too. I’ll take official visits to all those schools.”

Smith was in Athens for G-Day with his family and said he enjoyed watching some of the receivers and the Bulldog offense.

“That was a great day just seeing what the offense has to offer”, the four-star said. “I wanted to see myself making plays in that offense. The most memorable play was Colbie (Young) making a big play on the ball for a touchdown.”

According to FanDuel, the Atlanta Braves have +450 odds to win the World Series this year.

What’s Smith Jr's relationship with the Georgia staff?

“The staff has been great to me”, Smith added. They do a good job of communicating with me and letting me know how much of a priority I am for them. They keep me in the loop on things going on over there.”

How soon did James Coley call Smith Jr. after accepting the Georgia job?

“Before I even knew he was the coach I got a call from him telling me I was his new receivers coach at Georgia”, Smith Jr. said laughing. “Even before I knew he was the coach he was already reaching out and showing me love. We have a great bond. We talk a lot on the phone almost every day.”

“Coach Smart did a great job of connecting with my family”, Smith Jr. added. “He’s a great recruiter and a great coach but it was important to me to see how he jells and responds with my family.”

“Their pitch is all about how they can develop me”, Smith Jr. continued. “They tell me how I’d be prepared for the league if I develop into a great player here. They’ll have me prepared for every situation. They see me making big plays in their offense.”

What’s Georgia’s plan for the Westlake star?

“They said they see me playing anywhere as long as I absorb the offense. Mainly I’d say the “X”. They see me as a No. 1 guy who can make plays down the field but they said they can put me anywhere on the field.”

What did Smith Jr say about QB commit Ryan Montgomery and 4-star target CJ Wiley?

“Ryan (Montgomery) and I chopped it up right after he committed. I’ve got to watch more of his film but I know he’s a good quarterback. Him reaching out shows me that he’s going to be a great teammate if I do go to Georgia.”

“CJ (Wiley) and I have been training together with coach Terrance Edwards for a while. He’s a great receiver and we have a lot of similarities. If we were to go to the same school that would be crazy. It would be scary.”

What is Smith Jr. looking for in a school?

“I’m pretty much set on the football part but I mainly want to see how the campus is, how guys are off the field, and try to see how the environment is. I know NIL will be talked about a lot too on the official visits. That’s a big part of this now.”

When does Smith Jr. want to make a commitment?

“I’d say late June or early July. I’ll have my mind made up then.”

As a junior this past fall, the long, athletic pass-catcher hauled in 53 passes for 892 yards and 11 touchdowns. He’s ranked as the No.11 WR prospect, the No. 12 player in Georgia, and the No. 93 overall prospect in the country for the 2025 class.
